This monsoon, September 2011 floods triggered by heavy rains over the past week and due to huge discharge of water from Hirakud dam have erupted turmoil in the entire state. It is officially reported that 41 persons have lost their lives in the calamity due to drowning, snake bite, etc. besides at least 16 persons are missing out of which 10 persons missing being swept away/ drowned in flood water but their dead bodies have not been found so far and thousands displaced. The livestock casualty including poultry stands at 1667. It reported damage of 116706 dwelling houses. The state govt. submitted a property damage estimate of 2120.92 crore of rupees and also crop damage over 2.87 lakh hectares.

Nearly 3.1 million people spread over 19 districts (out of 30 districts) have been affected very badly by this Mega Flood of 2011, nearly 60% of whom are women and children, most of them in the coastal districts of Puri, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur as well as the districts of Sambalpur, Boudh and Sonepur. The situation continues to be grim in several places of the affected 19 of 30 districts. Heavy discharge in Mahanadi River near Cuttack created a severe flood situation in Mahanadi river system. 11 districts located by the side of this river were affected. These unprecedented floods due to furious monsoon lashed the entire Orissa. Several lives were lost thousands of families are rendered homeless and taking shelter on roads and other government schools and hospitals and in the open.

On 10th September (Saturday evening) scores of villages had been emptied as people fled to high land to take shelter following reports that more water could swell the rivers further by midnight. The coastal region bore the brunt of the floods as roads in many places in Puri, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Jagatsingpur, and Cuttack districts were submerged. Hundreds of adjoining villages remained out of bound as the connecting roads also were submerged. Almost all river embankments had been packed with people and cattle. As on to-day river Mahanadi and its tributary Kathajodi are flowing above danger level and these two huge rivers are flowing on both sides of Cuttack city, the old capital of Orissa with 1.2 million people.

Meanwhile, as newspapers report, 33,000 affected people in Kendrapara, Jajpur, Subarnapur and Jharsuguda districts were being given food in 120 relief camps. Over 1,200 boats were deployed for rescue and relief operations, while 2.8 lakh people were evacuated from low-lying areas. The State government said it had so far evacuated nearly 75,000 people and put them in 152 free kitchen centers. But given the “grim scenario” the actual number of persons having fled their homes was said to be far more. Furthermore, the violence and continued bad weather have caused serious disruptions to basic communication facilities such as major roads and bridges, making access difficult.

Health status quo in Flood areas:

The government has also reported sharp rise in vector-transmitted water-borne diseases, acute respiratory illness and cases of diarrhea among children in the affected areas.

Moreover, the state government has expressed major concerns about a possible public health crisis resulting from the pollution of groundwater tables in affected villages and the destruction of the water supply system. The destruction of latrines observed in all the affected villages has raised the spectra of a possible fresh outbreak of cholera, which has become endemic in the affected areas.

According to available data, the number of cases of Malaria and other vector transmitted water borne diseases has risen in our target region of Mahanadi basin.

Outbreak of diseases in flood situations:

Unprepared and catastrophic flood often results in the displacement of people who may find themselves in overcrowded temporary settlement. There is always a fear of outbreaks of diseases in the aftermath of flood. Environmental health problems can quickly arise in these situations. One of the most important tasks is to improve the standards of environmental health. This involves provisioning of improved sanitation, adequate and safe water supplies, and a decent shelter. Common problems found among flood displaced population are diarrhea, pneumonia and other respiratory infections, malaria, tuberculosis, measles, eye and skin infections, etc. Outbreak of cholera in settlement poses a serious threat and the poor disposal of rubbish also creates breeding sites for mosquitoes and attracts rodents that may harbor disease transmitting fleas.

Root causes of the diseases:

Diseases caused by poor environmental conditions are frequently related to fecal oral route of contamination. Fecal oral diseases like diarrheas caused by drinking contaminated water, poor personal hygiene like lack of hand washing at critical times and by poor food hygiene that is contamination of food by flies. These diseases can be virulent in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions and frequently the major cause of illness during flood. Excreta are the major source of diseases unless there is a barrier to the fecal oral route. Shelter related diseases such as pneumonia, where people become more susceptible to infection due to cold and wet. Disease caused by insect and rodent vectors, such as malaria, the presence of water gives scope to the disease vectors, the mosquito to bread. Flooding may initially flush out mosquito breeding, but it comes back when the waters recede. The lag time is usually around 6-8 weeks before the onset of a malaria epidemic.

TThe only epidemic-prone infection which can be transmitted directly from contaminated water is leptospirosis, a zoonotic bacterial disease. Symptoms can take 2 – 26 days , average 10 days to develop, and may include, dry cough, fever, headache, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea and shaking chills. Transmission occurs through contact of the skin and mucous membranes with water, damp soil or vegetation, such as sugarcane or mud contaminated with rodent urine. The occurrence of flooding after heavy rainfall facilitates the spread of the organism due to the proliferation of rodents which shed large amounts of leptospiras in their urine.

While people’s susceptibility to infection varies; it is likely to be greater among children, old, malnourished, and in people who are already weak. Malnourished children are usually in high risk.

Orissa has been experiencing heavy rains for over a week, under the impact of which most rivers have been flowing nearly full. Before the state could witness any sign of normalcy, depression caused another spell of heavy pours flooding the Baitarani and its tributaries for the 2nd time this monsoon. This spectre has been the worst; already affecting nearly 3 lakhs people in 6 districts of the state puts the number of affected villages at 829 belonging to 252 Gram Panchayats of 25 Blocks of the 6 districts. 711 villages have been marooned and 1 person has reportedly died.

The Districts of Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Keonjhar have been seriously affected due to very high flood in river Brahmani and Baitarani. District of Mayurbhanj and Balasore have also been affected due to flood in Budhabalanga and other rivers. The State government has ordered all schools and colleges in the flood affected areas will remain closed till the situation returns to normal.

The ground reality is much more heart breaking. Please pray and help the victims to relieve them from their awful misery.

The joy of Soura Tribal Congregation: June 24th was a day of rejoicing for the Soura tribal congregation of Nuasahi village situated at the foot of the Devagiri Mountain, the tallest in the district of Gajapati in Orissa State. The journey was tired some. I and my co-workers had to walk through muddy tracks and cross the river Mahedratanaya. Then one young man drove me on a motor-bike covering 4 kms. It was too late by the time we reached the village but the people were waiting patiently. The journey was tired some. I and my co-workers had to walk through muddy tracks and cross the river Mahedratanaya. Then one young man drove me on a motor-bike covering 4 kms. It was too late by the time we reached the village but the people were waiting patiently. All our tiredness vanished when we saw the crowd on reaching the village who rushed to us with drums and singing tribal songs and dance and took us in a procession.

They garlanded us as per their tradition and washed our feet. It is so humbling experience. As we began the dedication program around 400 people both young and old were seen sitting in side the newly built church building.
Their joy knew no bounds. They are well aware of the fact that without the help and co-operation of IEA ministry, it would not have been possible on their part to build a church of this size. Singing and tribal music filled the atmosphere. People brought gifts in cash and kind to the house of the Lord. Bags of paddy, fruits and some one gifted 05 plastic chairs for the church. Having witnessed all these our hearts were filled with gratitude unto the Lord. The pastors, office bearers of the churches and leaders were honored with brand new turky towels put on their shoulders. IEA ministry leader Rev. Dr. Parichha delivered a brief message recalling the previous life of Saura tribal people and tradition and how they lived as primitive tribal group of Orissa. But how the power of the gospel brought dramatic change in their lives both spiritually and socially. Now they are educated and civilized people and well accepted in the society. Now 80% of the Soura tribal population have turned to Christ. The Canadian Baptist Missionaries who labored for Saura and Pana people group about a century ago certainly deserved our applause. Now it is our turn to reach the still unreached of these people groups. Please pray as we continue to reach the Soura tribal people and plant more churches among them in the years ahead. The dedication program ended with Love-feast. More news will follow………

Urgent Prayer requests:

Please pray for dedication of Jalanga Church in the first week of July.

Please pray for speedy completion of Patri Church building.

Please pray for funds needed urgently to complete ground floor for IEA headquarters building.

People who wait upon the Lord experience transformation and success in their lives…

I am a Municipality worker. While I was on duty I got my finger injured badly and I could not go to work. I got medicines during medical camp at our locality. My finger was dressed and medicine was given as well. After a week of medication I was healed and joined my duty. My wife also suffered from fever and BP. She attended the medical camp conducted by Mobile Community Health Care unit of India Evangelistic Association where she was given medicines for her ailment. She is doing fine now.

- Mr. Prakash Parichha
Municipality Worker.

I suffered from diarrhea and was given medicines during Health Checkup Camp. I am Nrusingh Nayak, aged about 45, come from non-christian background. About 5 years back I became extremely sick and was bedridden. Despite doctor’s treatment there was no improvement in my condition. It is at this point IEA Pastor visited me and shared the gospel. I began to believe and then I was prayed for healing. IEA also helped me with medicines. Now I am totally recovered and living happily with my family who followed my footstep. I, my wife and son have been baptized. May God bless the vision of Rev. Dr. P. R. Parichha to reach the slum population through Mobile Clinic.

- Mr. Nrusingh Nayak
Employee, Malaria Dept.

I am a disabled woman of 40 yrs. I and my husband been married for 25 years. A few years back I was diagnosed tumor in my uterus. IEA admitted me in the hospital and paid for my surgery and medicines. Now I am perfectly alright for which I praise God. I believe like me thousands of slum people will be cured from their diseases through the Mobile Health Clinic in the slums.

-	Mrs. Basanti Dei
Housewife.

I live with my family in a slum at Satichoura. My son who is of eight years old was suffering from ear pain with pus. I took him to the medical camp conducted at our locality. He was checked by the doctor and medicine was provided through Mobile Community Health Care unit of India Evangelistic Association. Now my son is fine after medication. Thanks to Healthcare Project.

- Mr. Amar Nayak
Satichoura

When I fell very sick IEA took me to a doctor. Doctor said I have water deposited in my lungs for which I had breathing problem. I was paid all my medical expenditure by IEA. Now I am working as a watchman in a company. I hope more slum people will be benefited through the Mobile Health Clinic proposed by IEA. I pray for them.

- Mr. Mihir Jena.

Communities have expressed thanks and they say, “We are grateful for IEA’s timely help and moral support during our afflictions”………….

INDIA EVANGELISTIC ASSOCIATION has been extending its critical facilitation services in the areas of community based health care services since two and a half decades. Revealing some of the old touching reports:

Heavy rains almost washed the house which converted it to a much dilapidated and pathetic condition. Sheltering oneself in such state was almost impossible. Some of my key strengths lie in acting, drama, dance, anchoring (I have staged many programs and shows); I also have a strong passion about health, beauty and fitness and I think we must be proud to be part of God’s amazing creation of uniqueness and individuality. Now I have taken admission in a Beauty Parlour program which is sponsored by IEA. Furthermore, IEA has constructed a house for me and my family which is in a well refurbished and improved state. Thank you IEA for your support and goodness in needful times. I will be able to earn my livelihood and continue to enjoy my passion.

Just to add a few lines…….

Sunita is a bright student with good moral values. She is a Blessed girl with extracurricular activities. Agape has witnessed her anchoring during the celebration at Kolkatta Headquarters of Compassion East India in Kolkatta. She represented the Bhubaneswar Cluster (includes 9 different projects and centers). She brought accolades and cheer for her incredible job due to which she was also congratulated. She is punctual and continues to be involved for her active participation. She is very helpful, amicable and friendly. Today Sunita sets an example and re-defines what impoverished youth are capable of and what things they can achieve.

Sponsorship creates confidence and simultaneously helps youth perceive that the bondage of poverty don’t have to be permanent. With the long-term support, children begin to open up and see the possibilities…and their potential.

God stopped rain for Seekers Meet: The Metrological Centre announced, “On Thursday the 7th October, heavy rain expected during the next two days in coastal districts of Orissa”. Though torrential rain lashing parts of the State and hit normal life forcing people to stay in door, Goudakateni church wanted to go ahead with seekers program believing God which was planned a month back. Till the midnight of Thursday organizers and believers were praying and asking God for good weather on the next day. God who is in control of heavens and earth heard the prayer of these simple believers, as a result there was absolutely no rain since the morning of Friday the 8th Oct. A pleasant weather prevailed the whole day, as 50 Seekers of the Truth reached the venue with great interest to know the Lord. The meeting was greatly blessed. Four topics such as Creation of God, Faith and Salvation were dealt with in four sessions of the day. As Resource persons ministered the Word, inspired by the Holy Spirit, the power of God touched the lives of the seekers. They committed their lives to the Lord. Each of them prayed for and they returned home with new joy and hope. These seekers are from Hindu background. Further follow up is being planned. Please pray.

Summer Crusades Save Souls: Every year we conduct 4/5 crusades during summer in different IEA mission fields. But during 2010, temperature in some parts of Orissa went up to 49 degree Celsius that we were restricted for more programs. This was the hottest year as people felt as the heat was unbearable. This is the effect of Global Warming no doubt. Hence we had only two summer crusades this year. Despite the scorching heat, Gajapati District Crusade had very successful completion. A big temporary structure was built out side the Gajapatinagar church keeping in view that the church is not big enough for the large crowd that would gather. Around 500 people gathered for two days on 21st and 22nd April, 2010. Non-Christians from the surrounding villages also joined in the evening. Each day was packed with programs starting from 09:00 am to late in the evening. Of course there was leisure time for lunch and rest in the afternoon from 01:30pm to

03:30pm. Young people participated enthusiastically with their music and songs and made the program lively. IEA Ministry leader Dr. Parichha and a noted Evangelist Upendra ministered the word of God with the power of the Holy Spirit. A great movement of the Holy Spirit prevailed the atmosphere as people were moved. Nearly 50 people made commitment for the Lord, including non-Christians. The local church also been revived. All praises to God. The budget for a summer crusade of this kind is Rs. 30,000.00(US $700.00) which includes all logistics and food and travel for guests. You could sponsor a crusade to reach 500 to 1000 people with the Gospel. We plan to conduct one crusade towards end of November, 2010 since it was not possible to conduct more than two during summer. Please pray and support.

We have been reaching children through VBS (Vacational Bible School) in the past many years. This year during May 26-30, 2010 a total of 330 children joined in VBS for five days without fail. This was the biggest VBS in the city of Cuttack. Our attendance surpassed all VBS programs in the city. About 15 teachers were engaged to teach the children. Since we could not accommodate all classes in the Bidanasi Church premises, children were scattered all over the place. They used every place that was available for them. The month of May is the hottest month of the year in India. But in spite of the hottest climate children turned up at 06:30 in the morning every day for five days. It is very interesting to see them attending to their home work, using color pencils for drawing, memorizing Bible verses etc. The whole compound was full of activities. Do you know one girl (Swagatika) of 10 years of age recites 60 Bible verses in 10 minutes? Though unbelievable but true!! This girl hails from a Hindu family. Is it not amazing how God works in the lives of Children. Majority of the children in our two Child Development Projects are from non-christian families. But it is amazing to see them singing Christian songs, reciting Bible verses, praying, besides other activities they are involved in. Please pray for VBS program 2011 that children will be reached and come to know the Lord Jesus as their personal Saviour.

“Without wise leadership, a nation falls; but in the multitude of counselors there is victory. Proverbs 11:14 Orissa Leadership Conference: The long awaited event “Orissa Leadership Conference” came to pass on April 28th – May 1st, 2009 at the historic venue Barabati Stadium, Cuttack conducted by India Evangelistic Association in partnership with World Vision of India. The Conference Hall was full to its capacity as the inaugural session began with welcome song by Agape Project Children and then action song. Children welcomed the main speaker, speakers and guests with colourful bouquet. It was a beautiful sight. Out of 500 pastor, evangelists and church & mission leaders around 420 registered delegates came from 29 districts of Orissa. All the delegates represented 30 districts and various denominations and missions participated actively from day one to the last. In view of the prevailing situation in Orissa, we were a bit apprehension that the enemy of the gospel may bring in the spirit of disturbance during the conference. But as an answer to our prayer God undertook, over-ruled and control of the situation. This was a crucial conference after the unprecedented communal violence that rocked Orissa in December 2007 to December 2008 and beyond. About 100 pastors registered from riot hit Kondhmal district and were greatly blessed. A follow up plan has been chalked out mainly to mobilise intensive prayer for Orissa. During prayer mobilisation sessions in the conference, all delegates were divided into district-wise and 03 leaders were chosen from each district to lead the prayer mobilisation and accordingly 90 leaders have been chosen. These 90 leaders met on 6th June, 2009 for further discussion and planning. Please pray for the effectiveness of this prayer mobilisation team.
