Economic condition: Orissa is economically a poorest State in India. For decades western Orissa is severely suffering from drought. Added to it the Super Cyclone that hit coastal area on 29/30 October, 1999, the entire coastal area covering a length of 600 KM was almost wiped out. Tens and thousands of both humand animal lives have perished. Millions of rupees of properties and crops got damaged. While slowly recovering from the awful damage of the Super Cyclone, the recent Super Flood hit the entire State breaking its economical and infrastrucural backbone again. Every now and then Newspapers have been reporting starvation deaths in certain areas of the State for the past decade or so. About 47% of the total population live under poverty line. Orissa the persecuted State:The Orissa Freedom of Religion Act was passed in the year 1967. This Act was not effectively implemented until the brutual killings by burning of the Australian Missionary Graham Stains and his two minor sons in 1999. Since then the the persecution has taken an agreessive turn and quite a number of gospel workers have lost their lives. Many of our evangelists and Pastors continue to be threatened, beaten up, manhandled falsely accused and arrested, Christian houses set on fire, etc. The situation is becoming bad to worse day by day and only prayer can change it. |
