IEA also involved in emergency relief and rehabilitation of victims of natural calamities such as flood, cyclone and earthquake. Of late it is also seen that victims suffering from communal and ethnic riots draw our attention for relief and rehabilitation. In the global warming scenario at present the need for relief and rehab is most urgent.
We are very much involved in the relief and rehabilitation of victims of communal violence in Orissa the eastern Indian State. Our concentration is mostly in Kondhmal which is severely effected both during 2007 and 2008 communal violence. Nearly 50, 000 people have been displaced who fled the district doe to severe persecution and intolerance. More than 6000 houses and Churches looted and destroyed and set on fire. It is

reported that around 24,000 victims spent several months in relief camps miserably without adequate food, shelter, sanitation etc. In the first phase we provided relief packages to thousands of victim in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar privately run relief camps before entering into Kondhmal. At present our main concentration has been Tikabali block which was almost untouched. So far we have spent a total of around 2 million Rupees ($45,000) for relief and rehabilitation program and still we hope to continue until we reach the target.
Regarding relief to the flood victims during August 2007, it was done in three phases:

1st phase: During the 1st phase we provided polythene sheets to set up make-shift houses as they moved to higher places. They were given cooking provisions such as rice, dal, vegetables, bread and other eatables to affected families. Candles, match-boxes were also distributed as kerosene became a scarcity for lighting lantern.
2nd phase: It took time for the flood water to be undated and meanwhile hundreds of people suffered from fever, cold, stomach trouble, headache, etc. We provided medicines to hundreds of people in the slums. Again cooking provisions such as rice, dal etc., became essential requirements, as people could not go out for any work.

3rd phase: We had to send requests for funds to rebuild houses that collapsed due to continuous rain. People spent their days in miserable condition. God blessed and privileged us to contribute support for the rebuilding of their houses. The materials costed Rs. 10,000.00 for rebuilding each house in the slums and we have rebuilt about 68 houses. As the winter was approaching these families were rest assured about shelter in their newly built houses. Praise God for His mercy and grace during tough times in life.
